The effects of family play therapy on the attention-deficit, impulsivity, and hyperactivity tendencies of children

Abstract

|
This research was pre-test post-test control group design and was executed to test the effects of Family Play Therapy on attention deficit hyperactivity tendencies of children. The subjects were 11 families including fathers and their children in preschool age or early school age with the problems of difficulties in keeping attention. In EFP group, subjects were placed in the condition of ’Experiential Family Play Therapy’ program which included relax games, experiential play, and family free play and in SFP group subjects were placed in the condition of ’Structured Family Play Therapy’ program which excluded the experiential play. The whole programs had 8 sessions with pre-post-session and follow-up session to get the results from parents. The whole sessions were being observed and rated by trained 3 observers on the frequencies of attention deficit, impulsivity, and hyperactivities of children in the session. Parents of each group were asked to rate their perceived levels on the attention deficit hyperactivities of their children. All the rating results from parents and observers were analyzed with SPSS WIN V.12 to test the differences between the ratings of EFP group and SFP group and to verify the effects of the programs after its terminating. As results, significant decreases were showed on the rating scores in the EFP group especially on the observed rating scores during session. In SFP group, the observed rating scores showed significantly decreased. After all, Experiential Family Play Therapy had more improving and keeping effects on attention deficit hyperactivity tendencies of children.
